College Personal Finance is a finance course taught at Fox Valley Lutheran High School that allows students to earn college credits.
College Personal Finance is a study of the major financial decisions encountered by individuals. Subjects covered include budgeting, use of credit, automobile and consumer durables, insurance, housing decisions, taxes, retirement planning, estate transfer, and investments. Each subject is analyzed with the context of a comprehensive framework of personal financial planning. This course is designed to help students develop an understanding of money management techniques, saving and investing options, insurance, personal lifestyle goals and objectives, decision-making processes, and career choices. Topics also include budgeting, banking services, college decisions, credit, identity theft, taxes, car buying, and housing options. Students participate in a stock market game and budgeting simulation and also go on a field trip to participate in another budgeting simulation called Reality Check. Students are required to job shadow someone in the career they plan to work in.
Prerequisite: GPA of 3.0 or higher or instructor approval
Recommendation: a practical hands-on course especially for those who will soon be living on their own
Required: Beginning with the Class of 2028, Personal Finance or College Personal Finance is required for graduation.
