1.0 CREDIT EACH
Grade 9 (LAF1)
Grade 10 (LAF2) - for those in Student Services Program
These full-year courses emphasize skill building in reading, writing, and study skills. They are designed for students who benefit from a slower pace and more instruction on English fundamentals. Emphasis is on developing writing skills, improving reading comprehension, and learning how to find and cite text evidence to support claims. These courses primarily use HMH Ed Read 180 Program which allows students to access materials at their readability level. The goal of all coursework is to have students move successfully to Language Arts 1 in their subsequent year.
Prerequisite: None
Required: Yes, if not in LA1 or LA2.
Note: A freshman in Language Arts Foundations 1 (LAF1) is generally not permitted to study a world language during his/her freshman year in order to help them establish a strong foundation in English before attempting another language. In special cases, an exception to this may be made with approval of both the English and World Language departments. If a student is failing a world language class after the first semester, he/she will be required to drop the course.
