Fine Arts 2018-19

MUSIC

Symphonic Band - SBAND

1 credit - available to grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Members study advanced literature and ensemble techniques, perform in several concerts and Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) festivals, are part of the marching band, and are also eligible for pep band, jazz ensemble, and solo/ensemble

Prerequisite: instrumental experience and audition

Recommendation: interest in instrumental music

Required: No

Women's Choir - WCHOR

1 credit - available to grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Women's Choir is a two-semester course designed to provide any interested female student, grades 9-12, with an introduction to choral singing. This ensemble uses choral literature and other resources to teach vocal technique, basic music theory, and sight singing skills in preparation for singing in A Cappella Choir. Students do not need any prior experience in singing. The choir has five scheduled concert performances during the school year and may also sing for chapel services.

Prerequisite: A basic voice audition is required at the beginning of the school year.

Recommendation: interest in vocal performance (a desire to sing)

Required: No

Note: Class may be taken for repeat credit.


Men's Choir - MCHOR

1 credit - available to grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Men's Choir is a two-semester course designed to provide any interested male student, grades 9-12, with an introduction to choral singing. A Cappella Choir - ACHOR

1 credit - available to grades 10, 11, 12

This class imphasizes further development of vocal and choral technique. The combined female and male choir performs in school concerts, special engagements within the Federation, and at Wisconsin State Music Association (WSMA) festivals. One year of high school level choir is required, but by request this may be waived by the director for special circumstances.

Prerequisite: vocal audition

Recommendation: interest in vocal performance

Required: no

College Music and Culture - CMUCU- (formerly Music Appreciation)

0.5 credit - available to grades 11, 12

This class is intended to be a basic survey of music and its role in our lives. Students will listen to and learn to interpret and understand a wide variety of music from many genres, times, and places. Basic music theory will also be covered. No prior musical knowledge is required or necessary to take this course – only musical interest.

Recommendation: music interest, a Fine Arts credit alternative to choir, band, or art

College Music Theory - CMUTH

0.5 credit - available to grades 11, 12

This one-semester course offers in-depth study of the notation of pitch, rhythm and meter, expressive elements, major scale construction, intervals, triads, triads and their inversions, seventh chords, chord progressions, minor and modal scales, form, and will teach students to understand and follow the "rules" for composition in standard practice. Class activities include music reading, writing, listening and analysis, and aural recognition.

Prerequisite: two years of band or choir, or Music Appreciation and teacher approval

Required: no

Note: offered alternate years opposite Music Appreciation

Fee: There is an additional charge for the college credits. The college credit is received through the CAPP program at UW Oshkosh. ART

Realistic Drawing - RDRAW

0.5 credit - available to grades 9, 10, 11, 12

The emphasis for this class is on realistic drawing through various techniques, including proportion, perspective, and shading. All drawing is done in a sketchbook. Students will be provided with a sketchbook and kneaded eraser.

Prerequisite: none

Recommendation: interest in art

2-D Art - 2DART

0.5 credit - available to grades 9, 10, 11, 12

The fundamentals of line, shape, form, color, texture, and value are particularly stressed in this class. All materials are supplied.

Prerequisite: Realistic Drawing

Recommendation: interest in art

Painting - PAINT

0.5 credit - available to grades 10, 11, 12

This course introduces the fundamentals of colors, the mixing of colors, use of various tools and art mediums including colored pencils, pastels, acrylic and watercolor painting.

Prerequisite: Realistic Drawing & 2-D Art

Recommendation: interest in art

Sculpture 1 - SCULP1

0.5 credit - available to grades 10, 11, 12

Sculpture 1 is an introduction to hand-built pottery. Students will design clay sculptures using addition, subtraction, slab, paddle pot, coil and pinch pot construction. Students will gain an understanding of firing and glazing clay sculptures.

Recommendation: interest in developing artistic talent in ceramics

Sculpture 2 - SCULP2

0.5 credit - available to grades 10, 11, 12

This class further explores hand-built pottery including glaze make-up, firing methods (including raku firing), use of slips, decorating and construction techniques and soapstone carving. Wheel-thrown pottery is also introduced.

Prerequisite: Sculpture 1

Sculpture 3 - SCULP3

0.5 - available to grades 11, 12

This self-paced course for the motivated student further explores hand-built and wheel-thrown pottery construction, glazing techniques, and firing methods.

Prerequisite: Sculpture 1, Sculpture 2, and teacher approval, and teacher approval

Required: No


Photography - PHOTO

0.5 - available to grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This class is a study of digital photography and computer photo manipulation with a hands-on project-based approach.

Prerequisite: none

Recommendation: interest in taking quality photos

Required: no
