Pass/Fail Procedures

Options for 2020 Second Semester Due to COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on instruction and learning. Traditional face-to-face instruction has been replaced with virtual instruction with little time to train both teachers and students in this unique environment. Despite the best efforts of all involved, student learning in a virtual environment will continue to be a challenge for some.

As a result, FVL will provide students with alternative options to a traditional letter grade for courses during the second semester of 2020. Please read over the options carefully and consult with a Guidance counselor regarding the implications of requesting one of these options.

Procedures for Requesting a Pass/Fail Designation

A student may request by June 10, 2020, (via online form that will be made available) that the grade be changed by the Guidance Department to one of the following:

  • PS* Pass Satisfactory (C or higher, may meet prerequisite for next level course)
  • PO* Pass Other (C-, D+, D, D-, may not meet prerequisite for next level course)
  • NC No Count (F, no credit)

*Students must have completed at least 50% of Term 4 virtual learning activities (as reviewed by the classroom teacher) in order to qualify for a pass option.

Pass options will result in credit awarded for graduation, but will not be included in cumulative GPA or Semester Honor Roll calculations, or class rank tie-breakers for the Academic Excellence Award. Pass options may not be satisfactory to satisfy dual credit requirements or for post-secondary admittance. Please contact your Guidance counselor for further clarification.

Course grades designated as “Pass Other” do not imply a student has met the prerequisite for the next level course at FVL (i.e., Spanish 1 to Spanish 2, Algebra 2/Trig to Pre-Calculus, etc). As in cases where the letter grade prerequisite is not met, a student may submit an appeal through the Guidance Office to be considered for the next level course. Please contact your Guidance counselor for further clarification.

Course grades designated as “No Count” will not be awarded credit, will not be counted towards FVL graduation requirements, and will not be included in cumulative GPA calculations.

Final decisions for all grade change requests will be made by the FVL Administration and will be communicated to you no later than June 19, 2020 (senior requests will be expedited). We expect requests to be approved unless there is a negative impact on a student's academic progress, particularly graduation.
