- Each year, the FVL Boys Hoops Club will offer a Basketball Academy which will begin in September and continue through October. Most will be 1.5 - 2 hours long and will be divided into 3rd-4th, 5th-6th and 7th-8th age groups.

Tournament Team
Goals and Focus
- Strong focus on learning how to play the game of basketball with the character, attitude, leadership and discipline of a child of God.
- Strong focus on building relationships with and getting to know students from other WELS grade schools.
- Strong focus on introducing the fundamentals, skills, offenses and defenses used in the FVL program.
- Strong focus on developing a love for the game of basketball.
- Participation on one of our tournament teams is purely optional and is not a requirement for nor will it ensure a player a spot on one of our FVL high school basketball teams. However, it is an opportunity for participants to continue to work on their basketball skills and athleticism.
Eligibility and Selection
- Since this program is an extension to our LES, if a player is ineligible for his LES team due to poor grades or disciplinary issues, he will also be ineligible to participate on the Tournament Team.
- All players who attend the Skills Academy and indicate they would like to be considered for and intend to or are considering to attend FVL are eligible to be considered for these teams.
- There will be a single 10-12 person Tournament Team for each grade 5th through 8th.
- Players will be selected based on the attitude, effort and ability they show during the fall Basketball Academy.
- A team of coaches participating in the fall Basketball Academy will select the players for the team shortly after the final session.
Tournaments
- Weekend tournaments require travel to other schools in Wisconsin.
- The season will typically begin in early November and end in late March.
- All players on the team will suit-up for the FVL and Badgerland Tournaments.
- Typically 8 Players will suit-up for the remaining 5-7 tournaments with each player attending a minimum 4 tournaments. Some players will attend more tournaments based on a number of factors which would include but are not limited to attitude, effort, and ability.
Coaching
- Coaches will serve as an extension and promote the mission of FVL and FVL Schools, which is to provide students/players with a Christ-centered experience that prepares them for lives of service now and for eternity.
- The Varsity Head Coach will interview and select coaches who meet the values and skills requirements of the FVL Boys Hoops Club.
Playing Time
- Playing time will not always be equal during games, but in an effort to ensure each participant playing time in each tournament, the roster has been reduced to 8 players (with the exception of the State and FVL tournaments).
- All players will play in each game with the potential exception of the State and FVL tournaments due to a full roster of 12.
- At the State Tournament, the coaches will strive to get playing time in the tournament for all players. There may be situations where a player does not play in one or more games. If a coach believes this may be the case, they will reach out to the parents ahead of time.
- In an effort to help players improve their skill level and develop confidence, coaches will strive to put players into situations where they have the best opportunities to achieve success.
Practices
- Practice will be held 1 to 3 times a week depending upon the time of year and gym availability.
- Practices will most likely be held at FVL or one of our WELS grade schools.
- Playing on these teams is a privilege and requires a commitment. All players are expected to attend practices unless the below priorities conflict with a practice. If a situation occurs where a player cannot make a practice, the player is expected to notify the coaches in advance. Unexcused absences may impact playing time.
Priorities
The FVL Boys Hoops Club is not a replacement for the LES experience. It is expected that all players will also participate for their local LES.
It is our policy that the Hoops Club events take a back seat to any church and grade school commitments. Participating in a tournament should not happen at the expense of worshiping in church as a family, singing in church, participating on an LES sports team, or any other school commitments.
Conflict Resolution
Unfortunately, in a sinful world, conflicts may arise. God's word in Matthew 18:15ff commands that such conflicts are to be settled through proper communication between the people involved. The following steps outline the approved method for handling such conflicts:
- Emotions may run high after a game, if there is a concern, please take 24 hours and pray on it. Often reflection, time and prayer will lesson or alleviate the concern.
- For those who have a concern after 24 hours, you must first attempt resolution with the person with whom there is the dispute (coach, etc.)
- If no resolution can be reached, the FVL Boys Hoops Club Chairman may be contacted to seek further resolution. If the Chairman is contacted before the issue has been addressed with the individual, out of Christian love, he will redirect the conversation back to that person. A 3-way conversation can be held if needed.
- If after that consultation no resolution can be reached, the issue may be brought to the FVL Boys Hoops Club Advisory Board for further resolution.
The FVLHS Administration will not be involved in dispute resolution.
Federation Priorities
The FVL Boys Hoops Club is meant to be an extension of and complementary component to our LES system. It is our policy that FVL Boys Hoops Club takes a back seat to any church and grade school commitments, whether it's church, singing in church, sports, school commitments or anything else. If Sunday worship isn't possible due to a tournament, we strongly encourage parents to plan ahead and seek other opportunities for worship. This is a great opportunity for parents and coaches to reinforce the importance of proper spiritual priorities. We are truly blessed that in this area where there are opportunities for worship on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
If your son is scheduled to sing on a Sunday morning, that is his top priority. Because our teams consist of players from so many different congregations, we will be able to play a game even if there are a couple of players missing on a Sunday morning. The Tournament Coordinator will strive to schedule most tournaments on Saturdays.
Advisory Board
Be Positive, Work Hard, Serve One Another

As a group, they evaluate the program annually and make changes as needed to ensure it is meeting the stated Hoops Club goals and mission. They are also responsible to determine the best course of action if problems or situations occur within the program. All programs are annually evaluated with changes made so that we can best serve the youth and parents of the FVL federation. FVL Boys Hoops Club Philosophy
FVL Boys Hoops Club Philosophy
Therefore, we as coaches need to help our athletes, as well as each other, to grow in our dedication to God's word and His ministry (Sanctification), as well as to work constantly on developing character, attitude, leadership and discipline. As coaches, we know the value of these qualities; we know they are part of successful marriages, families, excellence on the job and relationships with other people. As coaches, we must teach these qualities to our players at all times and under all circumstances.
Let it be our goal that we always encourage our athletes to strive for excellence, not only on the court but also in every aspect of their lives. Excellence is represented by each of the qualities listed above. It is important to know that our program promises no wins. We only promise to pursue those qualities that will carry our players to success in their "lives of service and for eternity."
Coaches, be sure that the direction of our program centers upon the proper values. God, family, school, peer relationships, and other similar relationships must come before basketball. Make no mistake, we want success, we strive for excellence in everything. However, at FVL success and excellence are measured using a different scale… Have we, through the sport of basketball, given our athletes a Christ-centered experience that prepared them for lives of service now and for eternity?
"Do all things to the glory of God."
- I Corinthians 10:31
