05 - Sexual Behavior & Gender Identity

In the Bible, God gives his unchanging truth concerning marriage, sexual behavior, and the family. God instituted marriage as a lifelong union of one man and one woman (Matthew 19:4-6, Genesis 1-2). God determined the genders of Adam and Eve (Genesis 1:27), and God continues to determine the genders of people today from the time of conception (Psalm 139).

FVLHS rejects the idea that a person (rather than God) determines his or her gender (for example, a biological male decides to live as a female). Students struggling with questions related to their gender identities are encouraged to speak in confidence to a trusted pastor. These conversations will not result in disciplinary action. Students are expected to dress and use restrooms and locker rooms that conform to their God-given biological genders.

Marriage—as defined above (“a lifelong union of one man and one woman”)—is the only proper context for sexual intimacy and the procreation of children. A person who engages in sexual conduct outside of this bond of marriage sins against his or her own body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:13, 18-20). The Bible forbids all sexual activity apart from the Biblical definition of marriage. If the knowledge of sexual misconduct becomes public (e.g. sexual intercourse, oral sex, “sexting,” homosexual behavior, living together, pornography, etc.) on or off campus, will be treated as a serious violation of God’s will and may be grounds for disciplinary action or expulsion.

Appropriate government agencies will be contacted when students below the legal age of consent are involved in sexual activity.

Sexual misconduct that results in pregnancy is treated in the school’s “Pregnancy Policy.”

  • Public Display of Affection
Students of FVL will be permitted to hold hands with members of the opposite sex while at school. Any other public displays of affection are prohibited, and appropriate corrective and disciplinary measures will be taken.

  • Pregnancy Policy
If a student of FVL becomes pregnant or fathers a child out of wedlock, the administration will meet with the student, parents, and pastor (if possible) to discuss continued enrollment and participation in school activities. Concern for the physical, emotional, and spiritual welfare of the student and unborn child, along with concern for the student body and members of the FVL Federation will determine the course of action. This policy assumes that the life of the conceived child has been preserved. Because God is the Creator of life, the sinful decision to end life through abortion will be addressed according to Biblical principles. A complete copy of FVL’s Pregnancy Policy is available by contacting the Dean of Student Life, Administrative Pastor, or Principal.
